Landlines switching to digital- What could it mean for you?
What the Switchover to Digital Phone Lines Could Mean for You
You may have heard that traditional landline telephone services in the UK are being phased out and replaced with digital phone lines. While it promises improved technology and services, there are some important considerations for residents—especially in rural areas like ours.
What's changing?
Traditional copper landlines are being replaced with digital lines that run over the internet. This means your phone service will work via a broadband connection rather than through a telephone exchange.
Possible negative impacts to be aware of:
- Power cuts: Unlike traditional landlines, digital phones won't work during a power outage unless you have a backup battery. This could be a serious issue in emergencies.
- Emergency services access: If your digital phone line is down (due to power or internet issues), you may not be able to call 999.
- Equipment compatibility: Some older telecare systems, personal alarms, and phones may not work with the new system.
- Internet dependence: Residents without reliable internet may find digital phone services more difficult to use or maintain.
What you can do:
- If you rely on personal alarms or health monitoring devices, speak to your provider about compatibility with digital lines.
- Consider asking your phone provider about battery backup options in case of power cuts.
- Stay informed and plan ahead if you or someone you care for is particularly vulnerable or dependent on landline services.
The switchover is being managed by telecom providers, and you will be contacted in due course about when your service will be upgraded.
